2014 Paintings

Painting as Therapy.

About 12-13 years ago, I tried to paint the traditional way. I took an eight week class in a community school and I tried to paint an image or a picture that I like as the teacher taught me.

I sort of liked it. But soon, not only did I find the result mediocre, but it filled me with a sense of frustration and dissatisfaction.I did try that approach for a while and gave up for ten years then.

Then I became sick. One day that I was particularly angry. I took the oils tubes that i still had and mixed them together.
I used the colours that i liked the least. This was the result. I called it "Anger".

In the same breath, I did this one....which i later called "Immediacy".

Then I did this one which I called "The Clearing"

Those 3 "paintings" on cardboard surprised me. I took me a while to digest what just happened.

I kept looking at them, especially the "Anger" one which i didn't like.

But slowly I started to like it. I realised it had the merit to be very different. In fact It was unlike anything I'd ever done.

A feeling of disassociation can begin when what is happening "inside" are showed "outside". But this is where it is so therapeutic. When you start looking at the result, you realise "it is still you." Just a different you.

Slowly I began to use colours as means to represent my emotions. I would use Red for anger. Blue for sadness or calm...green for healing...ect...Colors became my palette to express my inner world.

Soon without feeling particularly angry or sad, I would start to use colors just for the love to blend and juxtapose colours.
It took me a very long time to realise that I didn't need to paint something that made sense to the eye to call myself a "creative person".

After many years of denying my own needs to create because I wasn't a proper "painter", I started to let go my expectations of what I "should" paint, to  paint "how I felt". This was the beginning of my journey to paint from the heart rather than from the head.
This way of painting has been very therapeutic for me and still is. I believe this art of "letting go" could be used by all.

It is also called "Intuitive or Soul Painting".
